Chile ist ein Land, das sich auf dem südamerikanischen Kontinent über 4275 Kilometer in Nord-Süd-Richtung entlang der Anden und des Pazifischen Ozeans erstreckt (zählt man den antarktischen Teil hinzu, circa 8000 Kilometer), aber durchschnittlich nur circa 180 Kilometer breit ist. Die engste Stelle beträgt im kontinentalen Chile (ohne Antarktis) 90 Kilometer, die breiteste Stelle etwa 440 Kilometer. Die Längenausdehnung Chiles entspricht auf Europa und Afrika übertragen in etwa der Entfernung zwischen der Mitte Dänemarks und der Sahara. Aufgrund der langen Nord-Süd-Ausdehnung über mehr als 39 Breitengrade, aber auch der beträchtlichen Höhenunterschiede in West-Ost-Richtung weist Chile eine große Vielfalt an Klima- und Vegetationszonen auf. Chile, officially the Republic of Chile (Spanish: República de Chile is a country in South America occupying a long, narrow coastal strip between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. With Ecuador, it is one of two countries in South America which do not border Brazil. The Pacific coastline of Chile is 6,435 kilometres. Chilean territory includes the Pacific islands of Juan Fernández, Salas y Gómez, Desventuradas and Easter Island. Chile also claims about 1,250,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi) of Antarctica, although all claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty.
